In the lighting world, there is one ‘strategy’ to fulfil aesthetics and at the
same time provide the lighting needs is called a contrast lighting strategy.
These contrast lighting can be divided into several types of ratios:
1. Dark & Light Ratio
2. Brightness Ratio
3. Beam Angle
4. Color
1. Dark & Light Ratio
In image number 1, it can be seen that there is an object that has a higher dark ratio with a backdrop of a wall object that has a higher light ratio. It will create a backlit effect.

2. Brightness Ratio
It would be perfect if you can apply dimmable lights so you can create a larger variety of scenes.

3. Beam Angle
Using several types of degrees, fixture lighting can create various effects for lightning design in a room. Referring to image number 3, where the light was placed in a narrow degree of the hallway to emphasize the wall areas. Whilst the large degree of downlight functioned as the general lighting for the middle of the corridor.

4. Color
The use and combination of CCT lights in one room is something that is currently admired.

A handful of clients/users are beginning to understand the importance of lighting and what flat ambiance means. A function of a room differs from time to time, as users themselves like the idea of change. It is no longer secret that lighting plays an important factor in achieving the maximum function of the room. The use of lighting points in areas that are less precise and do not fulfill the 4 ratios contrast lighting before is what causes flat lighting.
Nevertheless, that does not mean contrast lighting is only about the dark to light ratios and the various color types that are being used. Lighting Science is not only about aesthetics driven but a combination of physics as well. There are special calculations that must be taken into account when deciding on when to apply lighting ratios in lighting contrast.
The picture below is showcasing what not to do.

The use of dark and light ratio on the study table, as an example, can affect a user's eyes faster and make them tired quicker, and understanding the psychology of the body, our body does not support darkroom conditions.
Contrast lighting can function to any needs of the room.
There is a standard calculation of the maximum and minimum lux in a room that has been studied by lighting experts for a long time, which can be our guidance to design the lighting in certain areas. For example in a workspace of a home, the standard to use the available lux in a room has been set, and to produce this lux, we can play with lighting contrast by utilizing the surrounding interior and maximizing the architectural elements. Then, in the case of special properties such as resorts and galleries. We can use more dramatic impressions to enrich the shape of the building.
